中午被你的短信“吓倒”.........为了逃避现实～闷头睡觉了～嘿嘿～

1972年8月初，美国航空航天局的罗格里夫博士向全美国发布了一项骇人听闻的灾害预报，他说，“1972年8月10日下午14时30分，将有一个破坏力与落在日本广岛的原子弹不相上下的大陨石（实际上是一个微小行星）要袭击美国西部！”

　　当时不是愚人节，罗格里夫博士也不是造谣惑众。美国西部的居民那些天惶惶不可终日。到了预定时刻，只见一个耀眼的火球疾速划破蔚蓝的天空，从美国西部的犹他州、爱达荷州、蒙大拿州，加拿大的不列颠哥伦比亚省上空掠过。整整一个小时以后，这个陨石留下的尾迹还清晰可辨。成千上万的美国人和加拿大人都亲眼目击了这一罕见景象，不少天文爱好者成功地拍下了照片。这个陨石没有落在人们头顶上只能说是侥幸。当时这个陨石是在58公里的高空，以每秒15公里的速度，沿切线方向进入大气层的。正因为它速度足够高，于是又挣脱了地球引力，重返宇宙。罗格里夫博士根据观测记录推定，这个陨石直径4米，重达千吨，与铁比重相当，飞行速度是音速的50倍。如果考虑到它的重量和速度的话，那么它拥有的能量相当于2万吨TNT炸药，破坏力与美国当年投在广岛、长崎的原子弹不相上下。

Small asteroid hits earth Tuesday

spectacular show in the sky early Tuesday morning, when a small asteroid entered the earth’s atmosphere releasing a huge amount of light and energy before exploding.The asteroid, 2008 TC3, entered the earth’s atmosphere at 2.46 a.m. (GMT) in Sudan (Africa). The asteroid was also visible in Europe but not in Asia.

“Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock created a spectacular fireball, releasing huge energy as it disintegrated and exploded in the atmosphere,” Director of Nehru Planetarium N. Rathnashree told IANS.

The celestial activity holds significance for space scientists as for the first time they were able to predict in advance that asteroid of such small size will hit the earth surface Tuesday morning, Rathnashree said.

Turning down apprehensions of small asteroids causing an impact on people and property, Rathnashree said: “There is nothing to be panicky as after explosion in the atmosphere only small pieces reach the ground as meteorites”.

When a small asteroid enters the earth atmosphere, it compresses the air in front of it. That compression heats the air, which in turn heats the object, causing it to glow and vaporise with small pieces reaching the earth.

Astronomers in Arizona in the US discovered the asteroid on Oct 5 as it was inching closer to the earth.

ASTEROID IMPACT--UPDATE: Asteroid 2008 TC3 hit Earth this morning, Oct. 7th, and exploded in the atmosphere over northern Sudan. An infrasound array in Kenya recorded the impact. Dr. Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario has inspected the data and he estimates that the asteroid hit at 0243 UTC with an energy between 1.1 and 2.1 kilotons of TNT. Most of the 3-meter-wide space rock should have been vaporized in the atmosphere with only small pieces reaching the ground as meteorites.
No pictures of the fireball have been submitted; the impact occurred in a remote area with few and possibly no onlookers capable of recording the event. So far, the only report of a visual sighting comes from Jacob Kuiper, General Aviation meteorologist at the National Weather Service in the Netherlands:

昨天，一颗直径为0.91米至4.57米的微小行星拜访地球，而美国天文家提前24小时就预测到了这次火流星的到访。这是天文学家首次做出小行星撞地球的预警。

　　“这是第一次天文学家在小天体撞击到地球前发现它们。”北京天文馆馆长朱进透露，今年年底，天文馆也将开始预报火流星，市民可登陆网络随时了解可能划过北京上空的火流星“动态”。

　　-“偶然”发现天外访客

　　6日下午，国际小行星中心所在的哈佛史密松天体物理中心宣布，由美国亚利桑那大学小行星项目刚刚发现的小行星2008TC3将于北京时间2008年10月7日上午10时46分与地球相撞，概率为99.8%至100%。

　　“由于此次这颗小行星体积很小，直径仅为0.91米至4.57米之间，所以当它非常靠近地球时，天文学家才偶然发现了它的踪迹。”北京天文馆馆长朱进介绍说，发现这颗小行星的同时，天文学家立刻根据数据进行测算，结果发现它的运行轨迹是冲着地球而来的，便立刻预报了相撞事件。

　　不过不用担心，这位小巧的天外来客会以火流星的形式在大气中分解。朱进表示：“它对地面的损害被认为为零。”

　　“这是小行星撞击首次被成功预报出来，反映了世界范围内监测小行星的能力在不断增加。作为小行星方面的天文专家，朱进如说。

　　其实，长期以来，天文学家一直在监视太空，以求发现可能撞击地球的小行星。

　　“世界上有很多观测组织和观测项目，大家各有分工。一般情况下，天文学家会先从众多小行星中筛选出轨道有可能靠近地球的，之后根据较长时间的观测，确定它的准确轨道，最后预报与地球相撞的可能性。”朱进表示，“发现拜访地球的小行星可遇而不可求，因为可能与地球亲密接触的小行星体积都不大，有时只有当其接近地球时才会被发现。”

　　-是否有人观测到仍未知

　　据天文学家预计，临时编号为2008TC3的小行星应该在苏丹北部上空进入地球大气层。届时，非洲正值黎明前夕。小行星经过充分燃烧后，可能产生碎裂并伴随有陨石掉落地面，但不会在地球上产生任何破坏。

　　“是否有陨石形成则主要取决于小天体本身的材质。”朱进解释说，由于观测到的时间较短，天文学家来不及对这颗小行星进行光谱分析等测试，因此不了解它的物理性质，所以很难预测是否会有陨石落下。

　　因为撞击发生时间为北京时间的白天，我国不具备观测此次小行星撞击地球的条件。

　　专家表示，如果当时天气条件良好，当微小行星闯过大气层时，非洲东部地区的观测者会观测到一个非常亮的火球，自东北向西南划过天际，甚至观测到陨石雨。

　　但是截止到目前，哈佛史密松天体物理中心尚未公布相关数据和检测影像，也没有任何人发布消息称观测到这颗小行星。

　　朱进分析原因说：“可能因为非洲本身观测地点较少，另外不太确定非洲目前的天气因素是否适宜观测，如果天公不作美，观测就很难进行了。”

Explanation: On October 7, the early dawn over northern Sudan revealed this twisted, high altitude trail. Captured in a video frame, the long-lasting persistent train is from the impact of a small asteroid cataloged as 2008 TC3. That event was remarkable because it was the first time an asteroid was detected in space before crashing into planet Earth's atmosphere. In fact, after astronomers discovered 2008 TC3, the time and location of its impact were predicted based on follow-up observations. Later, the impact predictions were confirmed by sensors, including a Meteosat-8 image of a bright flash in the atmosphere. Astronomers are now hoping for more reports of local ground-based observations of what must have been a brilliant meteor streaking through Sudan's night sky. Additional reports could improve the chances of recovering meteorites.
